Independently, what have you done to work towards professional development in the past?

I was given the opportunity to study for and achieve professional certifications; CAP and OM through IAAP. I also joined grassroots organizations geared toward networking and professional development in addition to participating in webinars designed for the admin professional.

Why is the Executive Leadership Support Forum important for executive assistants?

I love the ELS Forum because it is refined for the C-Suite EA who typically has a higher level of expectations, concerns, protocol, and experience. You’re in a room with like-minded peers who have risen through the ranks to accomplish serving in this capacity. Not only do you have a packed agenda with trending issues but topics specific to your level of responsibility. You also have time to discuss best practices, share resources, and develop friendships. A bonus is earning IAAP recertification points!

In your mind, what is one tool you can’t live without or find especially helpful in your position?

My cell phone! We live in a time where instant communication assists in efficiency even while in the office. Cell phones enable me to still communicate via text to my boss while he’s in an all-day meeting with items that can’t wait until the end of the day. My boss also emails or texts from meetings to facilitate other unfinished business that needs to carry on. Of course, outside the office my cell phone keeps me connected which is particularly important when you work for a 24/7 organization.
